The largest jellyfish ever spotted belonged to the “C. capillata” species, also known as the Lion’s mane jellyfish. The largest recorded specimen had a bell (body) with a diameter of 2.3 m (7 feet 6 inches) and the tentacles reached 36.5 m (120 feet). A common species, the lion’s mane jellyfish is well known to divers for its painful, but seldom fatal stings; they are toxic and can cause severe burns. Most encounters cause only temporary pain and localized redness.

The lions mane is the largest but as has been said, not as lethal. The deadliest jelly is the sea wasp which has a bell only about the size of a basketball with tentacles up to 15 feet in length but has enough venom to kill 60 adults and can kill you in only 4 min although many people have been stung and have lived. Something as small as ladies nylons when worn over the skin can keep you safe when diving with jellyfish.
